The AT-ART9XA is the non-magnetic-core variant of the ART series, Audio-Technica's reference transducer family. The difference from a conventional moving coil cartridge lies in the generator: doing without the magnetic core removes the distortion that core introduces, and groove reading gains natural timbre and a precise sound field. To offset the output loss typical of this approach, the company uses a newly designed coil armature that raises voltage to 0.2 mV — a low figure that calls for an MC phono stage with serious gain and signal-to-noise ratio.
The tip is a nude Shibata mounted on a 0.28 mm solid boron cantilever. That combination is why response reaches 50 kHz and channel separation holds at 30 dB at 1 kHz, with 12 ohm coil impedance and just 2.5 µH inductance. Recommended tracking force sits between 1.6 and 2.0 g, 1.8 g as the starting point, and the 10 × 10⁻⁶ cm/dyne dynamic compliance suits medium-mass tonearms.
The 8.5 gram body has M2.6 threaded holes, so it mounts to a headshell or an integrated arm with two screws and no nut underneath. This is a cartridge for seated, attentive listening: acoustic and orchestral recordings and voices, where the generator's lack of colouration matters more than spectacle. Each unit ships with a non-magnetic screwdriver, brush, washers and 5, 8 and 10 mm screws.
