The VM740xML is the top of the moving magnet VMx series. Its nude Microlinear stylus has a 2.2 × 0.12 mil profile: a near-rectangular shape with a very fine, long contact edge that tracks groove modulation far more precisely than an elliptical. The result is better-defined bass, treble extended to 25 kHz and 25 dB channel separation with only 1.0 dB imbalance between channels, the best figure in the family.
To make the most of that tip, the cantilever is not a conventional aluminium tube but a die-cast aluminium part, stiffer and with fewer resonances. The metal body weighs 8.8 grams, a little more than the 7.2 g of the models below, and the assembly wants a medium-mass arm that controls it well. Output is 3.2 mV, the coil is 3.2 ohms and 480 mH, recommended loading stays 47 kohms with 150-250 pF, and tracking force remains 2.0 grams, between 1.8 and 2.2 g.
This is a cartridge for records in good condition and for systems that have already sorted out the phono stage and the arm: it will not forgive a scratched disc, but it returns an amount of information that conical and elliptical tips let slip by. It ships with a non-magnetised screwdriver and a brush in addition to the screws and cleaners. The replacement stylus is the VMN40xML, and the jump to moving coil demands another phono stage and another budget.
