The ATR3350xiS is a lavalier condenser in the classic newscaster format: small, black and easy to hide on a lapel. Its omnidirectional capsule picks up the voice from any direction, which is what you want when the person turns the head or the clip does not end up exactly where it should.
It runs on an LR44 battery and carries an on/off switch on the cable, so it can stay mounted between takes without draining. The 3 m lead ends in a 3.5 mm dual-mono plug that feeds the same signal to the left and right channels of a camera, a DSLR or a handheld recorder, and the included mic/headphone adapter lets it work with tablets, computers and phones that take a headset connection.
At 6 g the microphone itself is barely noticeable on clothing, and the 50 Hz to 18 kHz response with -54 dB sensitivity captures speech with enough body for video, interviews and presentations. The box includes a clothing clip, a foam windscreen and the battery, so the kit is ready to record out of the box.
