CB radios and amateur radio: what you need to get started
Citizens band (CB) is 27 MHz: a free radio band, with no fees and no licence (with type-approved equipment), that works when mobile coverage fails or when you want to talk to several people at once. We have worked with it for years and are one of the few places in the Garraf and Penedès where you can see it and try it in your hands.
What it is used for today
- Building sites and trades: two or more people coordinating without using data or depending on coverage.
- 4x4, countryside, hunting and mountains: where phones do not reach.
- Boating and harbour: contact between boats and with the shore.
- Businesses and events: warehouse, security, fairs, coordinating teams.
- Enthusiasts: those who enjoy talking to other stations, near or far, depending on propagation.
Base station or walkie talkie
- Base station (with or without rack): more power and better reception. The choice for a home, office, warehouse or boat with a proper installation.
- 27 MHz walkie talkie: portable, battery powered. Handy on the move, with a more limited antenna and power.
The antenna makes the biggest difference
The most common mistake: spending on a good radio and fitting a poor antenna. On CB, the antenna and its installation decide the range.
- Magnetic antenna: on and off in a moment, ideal for the car.
- Fixed antenna: with a mast and a good earth, the one that performs best. It needs installing.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a licence for a CB radio? With type-approved equipment used on the band it belongs to, no: no licence and no fees.
What range does it have? It depends on the terrain, the antenna and propagation. With a properly installed antenna it reaches further than people expect; in valleys or in the city, less. That is why we do not promise kilometres: we tell you what to fit for your case.
What should I choose for the car? A compact radio with a magnetic antenna is the most practical. For a fixed installation, a mount and earth are better.
Can several people talk at once? Yes: everyone on the channel and within range hears each other. That is its advantage over a phone.
